Visiting the Museum
We invite you to visit the Chester Museum at The Mill, located just steps from the center of Chester on our historic mill site, overlooking a mill dam and the Pattaconk Brook.
Visiting hours are Saturday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from June through October, and by special request.
Admission is free, but donations are always welcome to support our efforts to preserve Chester history. Handicapped access is available.
Two exhibits, filling both floors of the museum, tell the story of the life, development and growth of Chester, since it was first home to the Wangunk Indians.
A few years ago, we added Chester’s oldest artifacts – two millstones from the Waterhouse Gristmill on Goose Hill Road – to the front of our building. This was made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation of Middlesex County.
The millstones were cut approximately 285 years ago for a gristmill that operated from about 1740 until 1810. Be sure to read all about the millstones when you visit the museum.
